The south-end Toll Plaza and north-end Vista Point give you different ways to approach the bridge. For the Welcome Center and the east sidewalk, take a route to the south end; for Vista Point, use the north-end stop after crossing the bridge.

The Bridge Welcome Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It has historical information, exhibits, merchandise, and the original 12-foot stainless-steel Bridge test tower used in 1933.

The southeast visitor parking lot is normally open daily, including holidays, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. It charges $5 per hour, with a maximum consecutive stay of 3 hours. The northeast Vista Point lot offers free parking with a four-hour limit; restrooms are its only amenity.

How do you get from central San Francisco to the bridge?

How do you get from central San Francisco to the bridge?

Golden Gate Transit routes 101, 130, and 150 serve the south-end Toll Plaza from downtown or Union Square. You can board at Salesforce Transit Center Bus Plaza Bay A or at Golden Gate Transit-marked stops on Mission Street.

From Civic Center, those same routes stop at the south-end Toll Plaza. Board at 7th and Market streets or McAllister and Polk streets, across from City Hall. If you’re planning other city trips, getting around San Francisco from the Civic Center area can fit into the same transit planning.

To reach the north-end Vista Point, take Golden Gate Transit route 130 from downtown, Union Square, or Civic Center. Request the first stop after the bus crosses the bridge, then follow the walkway south to Vista Point.

The Bridge District says parking at the bridge is extremely limited and recommends public transit, tour buses, rideshare, rental bikes, or walking instead of driving. The southeast lot has 37 spaces, including 26 general spaces, 6 bus stalls, and 3 accessible spaces for visitors with disability placards.

Walking and cycling access

Walking and cycling access

Pedestrians, including people using wheelchairs and other mobility devices, may use only the east sidewalk, on the side facing San Francisco. In Pacific Standard Time, generally from early November to early March, it’s open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

In Pacific Daylight Time, generally from early March to early November, it’s open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Gates close at those evening times and reopen at 5:00 a.m.

Cyclists have toll-free access to the sidewalks 24 hours a day, subject to the published sidewalk schedule and remotely operated east-side security gates overnight. Cyclists must yield to pedestrians, follow the 15 mph sidewalk speed limit, and slow to 5 mph around the towers. All classes of e-bikes are allowed, but bicycle rentals aren’t available at the bridge itself.

E-scooters and similar devices, rollerblades, skateboards, roller skates, non-service animals, pushcarts, wheelbarrows, and drones aren’t permitted on the sidewalks. Service animals are permitted.

San Francisco City Guides offers free bridge walking tours twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Bridge District directs visitors to City Guides for the schedule.

Presidio and waterfront alternatives

Presidio and waterfront alternatives

The Presidio adds other bridge-area stops, including Crissy Field, Fort Point, and the Presidio Visitor Center. Muni route 28 19th Avenue serves stops at Golden Gate Bridge/Parking Lot and Golden Gate Bridge Tunnel/Merchant Road. Route 29 Sunset stops at Lincoln Boulevard and Bowley Street.

The Presidio Visitor Center sits beside the Presidio Transit Center and Presidio Tunnel Tops. It’s open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and has ramp access.

Daily park overviews are offered at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.; free ranger campfire talks take place daily at 3:00 p.m. at Campfire Circle in Presidio Tunnel Tops.

For a fuller day around the city, the one-day San Francisco itinerary from the Bay Hotel area connects the bridge excursion with a broader route.

The Presidio provides wheelchair-accessible parking and accessible restrooms at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center, Fort Point, and Baker Beach. Presidio parking is paid and regulated every day, including Sundays; fees vary by location and day, and you can pay at a pay station or through the PayByPhone app.

Weather, access and visitor rules

Sidewalk access follows different closing times in the standard-time and daylight-time periods, and the east sidewalk is the pedestrian route. Before setting out, check the official site before you go for current access details and visitor rules; the Bridge District is the operator to consult.

If you’re driving, account for the limited bridge parking and the separate limits at the two lots. The Presidio’s parking fees also vary by location and day, so choose your stop with those rules in mind.
